From my personal usage experience, I’d like to mention, that screen-saver function was new for me, also its really usefull. It scans your hard drive, while your pc is in screen-saver mode. Virus database is updated daily, good virus/spyware support. Once I sent to Alwil software sample of spyware file, which was not detected. Next day it was detected as spyware! Also there is very handy feature for windowsXP boot-time scan. Even when virus is still active and cannot be deleted in normal windows mode, you can schedule boot-time scanning, so after reboot avast checks whole your drive before os boots-up.

Linux has filesystem support for windows (fat, ntfs and so on), mac, and lots of others. Whats about windows? Microsoft didn’t make ext2fs reiserfs filesystem supports. But there are several solutions how to access linux partition from windows. First which I tried is explore2fs. Its simple, something filemanager-style browser. It supports reading ext2fs (also ext3fs because its the same but with journal). You can simply select export file from context menu and save it to your windows drive. There is screenshot:

I like this app because its small, no install needed and does simple file saving routine from linux. (Hate to reboot to linux just to save one file:). You can download it here: http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/explore2fs.htm
If you need more functionality there are drivers writen for windows. One of them, which I tested – EXT2IFS. This driver after instalation shows linux partitions as ususal windows disks. So you have more disks, and use them as windows partitions. You can download it from here: http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/ext2ifs.htm#Download
ReiserFs support (didn’t tested by myself):

TightVnc is remote administrator for windows and linux. Also there is clone form Mac osX – OSXvnc. TightVnc developed on VNC base and is opensource freeware soft. Whenever I need to connect to my personal home pc from work, I user TightVNC:
I was using Radmin before, but is it shareware and functionality very similair to TightVNC. Good thing, that this vnc is crossplatform. So you can connect from windows to linux pc and so on.
You can download TightVNC here
HINT: If you need to send “Ctrl+Alt+Del” to remote windows desktop, press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Del.
FREEping is one of theese little programs, which do that. Its freeware Windows GUI based ping with popup alerting and statistics.
Thats what authors say about FREEping:
- 100% Freeware
- Used by thousands of network administrators
- Small footprint, 1 executable file and 1 text-based configuration file
- Automatically gathers statistics while active
- Ping as many TCP/IP addresses as you want
- Popup alerts
My first impression was quite good, because I had to check ~50 IP’S are they dead or alive. So I downloaded, installed, formed .ini file with the list and watched action.
Everything was fine, I found dead hosts (or they were blocking ping).
So, this program is small, customisable, free, no trash in registry, uses standart .ini file (easy to form big list).
You can download it here: FREEping
